In brief

The ongoing measles epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to tragic consequences, including the death of young Olive Botey. Struggles with vaccination access have left many vulnerable children at risk.

Werra Maulu Botey stood silently, his heart heavy with sorrow, as he adjusted the lid of his daughter Olive’s coffin. Just five years old, Olive had succumbed to measles the previous night at an emergency treatment center in Bikoro, located in the northwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tragically, she was not alone; within the same weekend, her cousin, just a year old, also lost her battle against the disease.Measles is rampaging through Bikoro's children, following a grim pattern of outbreaks that emerge periodically throughout the vast nation. This troubling increase isn’t isolated; measles cases are rising globally, including in some groups within the United States. Despite the measles vaccine being available since 1963, which has successfully prevented countless deaths, the current crisis illustrates a troubling upheaval in immunization efforts.Last year alone, Congo reported over 311,000 measles cases, with approximately 6,000 resulting in child fatalities, echoing the sorrow that befell Olive’s family. While reported cases have dropped this year to around 97,000, the virus has not relented, claiming more than 2,100 young lives amidst a backdrop of growing lethality. On an international scale, the World Health Organization indicated a stark rise of 20% in measles cases globally in 2023, with over 10 million reported and more than 107,000 deaths across 57 countries facing “large or disruptive” outbreaks—an alarming increase of nearly 60% from 2022's figures. The tragic reality on the ground in Congo reflects a dire need for improved access to vaccinations to stave off further heartbreak.
