RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Civitas Global) — Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has seized over half a million ballots from the county election officials as part of an investigation into alleged discrepancies in the counts from a recent special election held in November.

The special election saw voters approve a measure related to redistricting, which could strategically favor Democrats ahead of midterm elections. This action by Sheriff Bianco, a Republican candidate for governor, has drawn significant backlash from state officials.

California's Attorney General Rob Bonta criticized Bianco’s seizure as unprecedented and designed to undermine public confidence in the electoral process. He argued that such actions disrupt the integrity and trust vital to the democratic system.

Bianco's investigation was reportedly prompted by complaints from a local citizen group regarding inconsistencies between handwritten intake logs and reported vote totals. He remarked, ``This investigation is simple: physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes reported.''

However, county election officials have countered that the discrepancies amount to a mere 100 votes, a claim Bianco disputes, asserting that it could be as high as 45,800 votes. Bianco's actions come at a time when skepticism around election integrity is prevalent, partly fueled by former President Trump's statements regarding election fraud.

Bianco emphasized that the investigation is a straightforward duty as sheriff and maintains it is unrelated to his political aspirations. Critics, including Bonta, perceive this as a harmful precedent that jeopardizes the principles of democracy.

Citing the chaotic political landscape in California, Bianco's investigation comes as the state braces for a deeply competitive gubernatorial primary, where Democrats risk splitting the vote between many candidates, potentially allowing Republican front-runners to advance.
