Demolition of Luxury Prisons in Indonesia Sparks Worldwide Outcry
On 23 September, a surprise inspection of Cibinong Prison in Bogor, just outside Jakarta, exposed a series of opulent “luxury apartments” that were apparently used by privileged inmates.
The residents fitted the units with air‑conditioners, big‑screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas and dining tables, and inspectors even discovered a gym, a golf simulator under construction and luxury vehicles parked inside the compound.
While the prison officials maintain the apartments were intended for staff, the revelation has reignited scrutiny over alleged corruption where wealthy or well‑connected inmates secure preferential treatment through bribery.
The discovery has triggered widespread public anger, leading to calls for comprehensive prison reform and greater transparency across Indonesia’s penal system.
The demolition of the luxury complex marks the first time the Indonesian authorities have taken such decisive action against prison abuse, signalling a potential shift towards a more open and accountable correctional system.
