Israeli air strikes have destroyed two bridges over the Litani River linking southern Lebanon with the rest of the country, the military says. It comes hours after the Israeli military said it would target crossings it alleged were being used by the Hezbollah armed group to move fighters and weapons. Elsewhere, Israeli strikes hit multiple locations in Beirut, killing at least 12 people and wounding 27, Lebanese authorities reported. The escalation marks a widening of Israeli strikes beyond the southern suburbs into central Beirut.

The Lebanese health ministry states that since March 2, 968 people, including at least 111 children, have been killed. The conflict has drawn Lebanon into the ongoing US-Israel war against Iran, particularly after Hezbollah launched missiles into Israel, prompting retaliatory air strikes from Israel and ground troop deployments in southern Lebanon.

Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that the bridges were targeted in a direct action against Hezbollah's use of Lebanon's state infrastructure to advance terrorist activity, although Hezbollah has yet to comment on these claims.

Civilians have faced devastating consequences, with over a million displaced as a result of the ongoing violence. Israel has issued warnings to evacuate civilians near the Litani crossings, adding to the existing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Strikes have also affected various locations in Beirut and surrounding areas, with reports of civilian casualties in places where the fighting is ongoing. It remains a critical time for Lebanon as it grapples with the intensifying conflict and the fallout from Israeli military actions.
