The FBI has released the first physical description of a man believed to have kidnapped Nancy Guthrie
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of US news anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona home two weeks ago. Authorities believe she was taken against her will in the middle of the night.
In recent developments, the FBI has analyzed doorbell camera footage, which has led to the identification of a suspect described as being between 5ft 9in (175cm) and 5ft 10in tall, with an average build. This report marks the first time the man captured in the footage has been officially identified as a suspect in this case, which has garnered significant media attention both domestically and internationally.
In a statement, the FBI highlighted that they have been able to identify certain details through forensic analysis, particularly noting the suspect's backpack—a 25-litre Ozark Trail Hiker Pack—as a significant piece of evidence. Additionally, a pair of black gloves has been recovered during the search efforts.
Nancy was last seen on January 31st, when family members dropped her off at home. Her absence was noticed at a church service the following day, prompting authorities to intervene. Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that she may be in critical health due to a lack of her prescribed medication.
Since the FBI’s appeal for information, they have received over 13,000 tips, with approximately 4,000 submissions coming in the first 24 hours following the release of the doorbell footage. In response to the overwhelming tips, the FBI has increased the reward for information from $50,000 to $100,000.
In an earlier incident, a man was detained briefly in connection to Guthrie's disappearance, but was released shortly thereafter, claiming not to know who she was. Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have taken to social media to appeal directly to their mother's abductors, insisting they believe she is still alive and offering to pay for her return.
