Global Coalition Targets Russian Energy Exports Amid Ongoing Conflict

More than 20 nations supporting Ukraine have pledged to "take Russian oil and gas off the global market" as part of an effort to pressure President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

"We're choking off funding for Russia's war machine," said UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, after hosting a summit of the so-called "coalition of the willing" in London.

The UK and US have recently sanctioned Russia's two largest oil companies while the EU has targeted Moscow's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the summit, stated that "pressure" on Russia is essential to halt the fighting and urged for long-range military support. Despite calls for enhanced military aid, no specific long-range missile deliveries were announced at the summit.

Zelensky has frequently argued for US-made Tomahawks and European missiles to impact Russia more significantly. However, recent discussions with US President Donald Trump indicated a lack of readiness to supply such weapons.

Following the summit, Starmer declared that Putin was "not serious about peace", reaffirming a united approach from Ukraine's allies aimed at supporting Ukraine throughout the year.

Efforts also focus on targeting Russian assets to unlock resources for financing Ukraine's defense, although no specific details were provided.

As winter approaches, the UK Prime Minister mentioned that the coalition would strengthen Ukraine's air defenses, seeking to safeguard civilians and crucial infrastructure from ongoing Russian air attacks.

Many Ukrainians are preoccupied with immediate challenges like power shortages, water supply issues, and continuous air raids, which hamper life significantly. Feedback from citizens indicates a dire situation with concerns that relief may not arrive soon.

The summit also included discussions with other global leaders, while highlighting Ukraine and its allies’ agreement on a ceasefire proposal for negotiations, a plan rejected by Russia.
