In brief

In a troubling development for the nation, three buses exploded in parking lots near Tel Aviv on Thursday night, prompting a nationwide security alert and the suspension of bus and train services. Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the incidents, which authorities believe may be part of a coordinated terrorist effort.

The explosions occurred in Bat Yam, a city located south of Tel Aviv, at different depots, stirring significant alarm across the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded swiftly, taking to Twitter to announce that he had ordered a “massive operation” targeting militant locations in the West Bank. Further security measures were put into place, specifically focusing on preventing additional attacks across Israeli cities. Tzvika Brot, the mayor of Bat Yam, confirmed that authorities found unexploded bombs in nearby Holon, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. He declared the city will maintain heightened security over the weekend while ensuring that daily routines, including school activities, would continue without interruption. In a remarkable near miss, Ofir Karni, the director of Dan bus company, revealed that the last passenger on one of the affected buses had alerted the driver about a suspicious bag. Following that, they managed to evacuate just before the bus detonated. This escalation of violence comes at a time when Israel's fragile cease-fire with Hamas seems to be approaching its end, raising concerns about a potential surge in conflict.
