Norwegian court proceedings have landed a high‑profile individual in jail. Marius Borg Høiby, the 29‑year‑old son of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, was found guilty of two counts of rape after a trial in Oslo District Court.

The judge panel cleared him of two other rape charges but upheld convictions for several other offences. Høiby was handed a four‑year prison term, a decision that fell short of the seven‑year, seven‑month sentence prosecutors sought.

Høiby was not physically present for the verdict; he watched the proceedings over a video link and would now be able to appeal the decision.

Although raised within the royal orbit, Marius Borg Høiby is not a member of the Norwegian royal family. His mother, Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, is seriously ill with pulmonary fibrosis and has recently been listed for a lung transplant.

Through the prison term, his lawyers have asked for his release so he can spend time with his ailing mother. The case underscores the intersection of criminal justice and royalty in Norway.
