The Louvre Museum in Paris has reopened its Galerie d'Apollon, the gallery that once housed France's crown jewels, after a daring jewellery theft that took place on 19 October. The six-month hiatus ended with the space open to visitors but empty-spoken, as no gems are on display. “This is an iconic space within the Louvre, but it will no longer house the Crown Jewels and gemstones, which are to be displayed in secure areas elsewhere in the museum,” commented museum director Christophe Leribault.
The robbery involved masked thieves who used a truck fitted with mechanical ladders to enter the gallery via a balcony. Police have arrested four individuals whom prosecutors link to the crime, but the stolen items have yet to be recovered.
