As the New Year approaches, two of America's most treasured celebrations—the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, and the iconic ball drop in New York City—are anticipating adverse weather conditions.
The Rose Parade, which is held on New Year’s Day, is forecasted to experience rain, something that hasn’t happened in the parade's 137-year history for two decades. It’s looking like a wet one, said AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick, suggesting possible thunderstorms along with the rain. Organizers are preparing for a two-hour parade that usually attracts hundreds of thousands in person and many more on television.
Meanwhile, in New York City, temperatures on New Year’s Eve are expected to dip to the low 30s Fahrenheit (approximately zero degrees Celsius). Along with the cold, light snow flurries could greet the thousands of attendees at Times Square for the famous countdown. Forecasters predict that the midnight temperature could be among the coldest recorded since the New Year into 2018.
Additional cities also face unique weather predictions. Las Vegas may experience rain and fireworks from rooftops of the famous casinos, while Nashville's Big Bash and celebrations in New Orleans will require attendees to bundle up in chilly weather.
