ROGERS, Ark. — Northwest Arkansas has become a focal point in the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, primarily due to Benton County's collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and aggressive local law enforcement practices.

The region illustrates concerns over law enforcement's role in immigration arrests, with ICE offering financial incentives for local cooperation. The Associated Press analyzed data and interviewed residents to uncover the implications of such programs.

Benton County: High Rates of ICE Arrests

This year, more than 450 individuals were apprehended by ICE at the Benton County Jail, reflecting an average of 1.5 arrests per day from a population of around 300,000. This arrest rate is attributed largely to the county's 287(g) agreement with ICE, allowing deputies to inquire about the immigration status of incarcerated individuals.

The county's efforts have significantly contributed to the nationwide total of arrests made under similar agreements, which are under scrutiny for their effectiveness and fairness.

Range of Charges Among Arrested

Of those turned over to ICE, about half had prior convictions. Offenses varied widely, from severe crimes like sexual assault and drug trafficking to misdemeanors like public intoxication and unsafe driving. Concerns have arisen regarding how traffic violations have increasingly led to ICE detentions.

Widespread Expansion of ICE Partnerships

ICE's agreements with local agencies have proliferated nationwide, growing from 135 at the beginning of the administration to over 1,180. Payments for training and resources are often provided, with Republican-led states seeing a marked increase in such collaborations.

Fear and Insecurity Among Immigrant Communities

Immigrants in northwest Arkansas report heightened fear of racial profiling. Many avoid driving or limit their outings to necessities, fearing deportation. One resident even described his home as a 'kind of jail' due to his anxiety about being detained.

Personal Impact: Separation of Families

Personal stories reflect the emotional toll of these detentions. Cristina Osornio, a legal resident, was unjustly held by ICE after being pulled over for a minor infraction. The disparity in her and her husband’s situations highlights the devastating effects on families, financial stability, and emotional health, as seen in the anguish of children missing a parent due to deportation.
