MIAMI (AP) — President Donald Trump shared a video of a deadly attack allegedly by a Haitian immigrant accused of bludgeoning a woman with a hammer at a Florida gas station, portraying the killing as justification for his administration’s mass deportation agenda.

Rolbert Joachin, 40, was arrested and charged with killing a woman on April 2 in Fort Myers. The victim was identified as Nilufa Easmin, a 51-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh and mother of two. Trump often paints immigrants as a threat, and the horrific nature of this case provided him with a sharp opportunity to reinforce his views.

“The video of her brutal slaying is one of the most vicious things you will ever see,” Trump stated, labeling the alleged assailant as an “animal.”

Critics argue that the president's rhetoric unduly criminalizes all immigrants, while research shows that immigrants, including those in the U.S. illegally, tend to commit fewer crimes than native-born citizens. Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance condemned the exploitation of this attack, asserting that it is unjust to use a tragedy to demonize an entire group.

Details of the Incident

In security footage, Joachin is seen attacking Easmin before fleeing the scene. Easmin was a dedicated mother who worked at the gas station convenience store and had lived in the U.S. for approximately three decades.

Debate over Immigration Policy

Following the incident, Trump criticized President Biden for granting Joachin temporary protective status, which has now been revoked. The acting ICE director assured the public that measures will ensure Joachin is not allowed back on the streets.

As discussions regarding immigration policy intensify, lawsuits are ongoing that could impact the status of up to one million immigrants, including many Haitians. Advocacy groups continue to press for humane treatment and protection against sweeping immigration reforms.
