A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated.

He is the third military official to have been killed in bomb attacks in the Russian capital over the last year.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, according to the committee.

The investigation is considering the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence services may have been involved, although Ukraine has not commented on this.

Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in hospital, prompting an investigation into both murder and illegal trafficking of explosives. Investigators have already been dispatched to the scene, which is located in a car park near an apartment block in southern Moscow.

Images from the site reveal significant damage to a white Kia Sorento, the vehicle involved in the explosion.

The general previously participated in military operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and led operations in Syria from 2015 to 2016.

Following the incident, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin had been informed of Sarvarov's death. This attack is part of a disturbing trend since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the assassination of military officials becoming increasingly common in Moscow.

Notable past incidents include the killing of Darya Dugina, daughter of a prominent nationalist figure, in a similar bombing in 2022, as well as the deaths of other high-ranking officials. Ukrainian sources have indicated potential involvement from their security services, although official admissions remain absent as a matter of policy.
