A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.
Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated. Sarvarov, 56, served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
The committee mentioned that one theory being investigated is that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. Ukraine has not commented on this incident.
Investigators have been dispatched to the scene, located in a parking lot near an apartment complex in southern Moscow. Eyewitness images show a severely damaged white car, with debris scattered around other vehicles in the lot.
This assassination is part of a disturbing trend; since Russia initiated its comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several military personnel have been targeted in Moscow. Earlier this year, Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was also killed in a car bomb attack, while Gen Igor Kirillov died in December 2024 due to a remotely detonated explosive hidden in a scooter.
A Ukrainian source claimed responsibility for Kirillov's death, though this has never been officially acknowledged by Ukraine, which typically refrains from admitting responsibility for such targeted operations.
