In brief
Recent airstrikes in Lebanon aimed at a Hezbollah-affiliated financial organization signal a strategic shift in Israel's approach to combatting the group's influence.
The Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon on Sunday, targeting the branches of Al-Qard al-Hasan, an organization closely associated with Hezbollah's financial operations. This group has been under U.S. sanctions since 2007 and is accused of functioning as Hezbollah's primary banking entity. In Lebanon, it operates as a non-governmental organization, providing essential financial services to citizens in a country where traditional banks are struggling. The airstrikes occurred in various locations around Beirut and in southern and eastern Lebanon. Avichay Adraee, Israel's military spokesperson, urged civilians to evacuate nearby areas, declaring the organization complicit in funding Hezbollah's activities against Israel. Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions throughout Beirut, with smoke rising from the affected locations. This military action represents a significant escalation in Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah. Israeli intelligence has indicated that targeting the financial underpinnings of Hezbollah aims to disrupt its operations, weaken its standings within the Shiite communities it serves, and hinder the group's capacity for regrouping and reconstruction. The assault represents a tactical shift from previous operations that focused mainly on military installations to now addressing Hezbollah's financial network.
