ALAMEDA, Calif. — Law enforcement officers fired shots at a vehicle that backed into a U.S. Coast Guard base in the San Francisco Bay Area following a day marked by protests against federal immigration agents. The shooting incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Thursday at the Coast Guard base, as reported on social media by the Coast Guard.
The vehicle, reportedly a U-Haul truck, drove away from the scene, and fortunately, no Coast Guard personnel sustained injuries. Witnesses described the vehicle reversing toward the base, prompting Coast Guard security to issue multiple verbal commands to stop, which the driver ignored, escalating the situation.
According to a statement from the Coast Guard, When the vehicle’s actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of live fire. The FBI has since initiated an investigation into the incident, although details on the driver or their motives remain unclear.
This escalation occurred just hours after President Trump announced the cancellation of a planned surge of federal agents in San Francisco aimed at curbing crime, a decision welcomed by some local officials who claimed crime rates had been on the decline.
Earlier that day, protests erupted on the island as demonstrators gathered to voice opposition to the federal actions, holding signs with messages like Protect our neighbors and No ICE or troops in the Bay. The presence of federal agents drew considerable public dissent, highlighting ongoing tensions between local communities and federal immigration policies.
Coast Guard Island, where this incident unfolded, is a federally owned site that serves as a base for various Coast Guard operations along the West Coast. Security protocols at the base are stringent, with access restricted without proper identification or an escort.
