In brief
The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after an unknown projectile struck it in the Strait of Hormuz, with all 21 crew rescued unharmed. A sister vessel, GFS Giselle, also sustained damage but managed to reach harbor safely. The incident highlights the growing dangers to commercial shipping in the key chokepoint amid escalating tensions between Iran and the West.
The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride was hit by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, sinking shortly thereafter. All 21 crew members were rescued, with no injuries reported.
A sister vessel, the Singapore-flagged GFS Giselle, sustained hull damage from a separate projectile strike on Wednesday but reached a safe anchorage with its 22‑member crew unharmed.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim the sinking was caused by a naval mine and that the vessel was passing through an "unauthorised" route. Photographs released by the Guards show black smoke rising from a damaged container ship that was still afloat.
Pakistani maritime authorities report that GFS Pride sank 4 nautical miles (7.4km) northwest of Ras al‑Sheikh Masud on Oman’s Musandam Peninsula.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency notes that two unnamed container ships were struck by unknown projectiles between 16:40 and 17:00 GMT on Tuesday, sustaining only minor damage and continuing their journey.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks in the Strait of Hormuz that has escalated since the US–Israel‑led war with Iran began in February. At least 24 seafarers have been killed in 106 confirmed incidents, and two container vessels – the Malta‑flagged Safeen Prestige and the Antigua and Barbuda‑flagged bulk carrier Cape Dao – have also sunk.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical choke point, handling roughly a fifth of global oil and gas shipments. In response to repeated hostilities, the United States has deployed naval escorts for tanker convoys, while a brief cease‑fire agreement in June was collapsed as Iranian attacks resumed and the US reinstated its blockade.
