Police were called to Brinell School in Fagersta at around 14:00 local time on Friday, where they arrested an 18‑year‑old man following a sword assault that claimed one life.

The teacher‑armed assassin struck without hesitation, and officers fired at him before detaining him. He remains unnamed while police work to uncover motives and confirm that no further danger exists to the public.

Two teenage boys received serious injuries, and one other person suffered minor wounds. Eight nearby schools were placed under lockdown, a status that has now been lifted, though the Västmanland region remains on high alert.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the event as a “serious incident” and stressed that investigators are working intensively. King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed dismay and sadness, offering thoughts to victims’ families.

The attacker was reportedly wearing a helmet and was a former student of Brinell School, which hosts just under 500 pupils and lies 170km northwest of Stockholm. The school was only resuming classes after the summer break.
