Romanian prosecutors charge Andrew and Tristan Tate with trafficking minors and sex crimes
Romanian authorities have formally accused social media personalities Andrew Tate (39) and Tristan Tate (38) of exploiting a minor and profiting from illegal video‑chat activities. The indictment claims the brothers made more than $1.2 million (£888,000) by coercing a 15‑year‑old woman to perform sex acts on video channels while in Romania.
Andrew faces additional charges of trafficking minors, money laundering and sex with a minor. Tristan is charged with complicity in trafficking minors and money laundering. The prosecutors also seek confiscation of four luxury cars owned by the Tates worth a combined £710,000, alleging the vehicles were used to launder the proceeds of the alleged crimes.
Both men are currently held in a Miami jail where they are fighting extradition to the United Kingdom for unrelated charges. They deny all allegations, stating that their online personas do not reflect their true selves. Their lawyer, Eugen Constantin Vidineac, emphasized that the indictment is a procedural step and that the case will undergo judicial scrutiny before any trial can begin.
The case highlights the continued international legal challenges facing the Tate brothers, who have been under investigation in Romania since December 2022. The new charges follow the failure of an earlier indictment, which was held up by judicial scrutiny for procedural and evidential irregularities. The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) now seeks to move forward with the prosecution, but it remains unclear whether they will pursue extradition from the United States.
