MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Following a mass shooting that killed two people and wounded a dozen others in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey said Monday that the state will take a greater role in public safety efforts in the capital city.

The deadly shooting unfolded Saturday around 11:31 p.m. in a bustling downtown area filled with bars, hotels, and restaurants, close to the Alabama Capitol.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys indicated that one victim was targeted, leading to an outbreak of gunfire that involved multiple shooters. As you can imagine, that could be a very chaotic situation, Graboys noted, stating that seven of the fourteen victims were under the age of 20.

Ivey stated that state patrols will be extended to encompass more downtown areas and is pushing for legislative approval for additional resources for state law enforcement.

“Let me be clear: All available state assets are being discussed, and ALL options remain on the table,” Ivey emphasized Monday. Observing that Montgomery is a unique place rich with history and community strength, the governor pledged comprehensive action in light of the tragedy.

Ivey lamented the loss of life at the hands of criminals. Reflecting on previous initiatives, she mentioned the establishment of a multi-agency task force created to tackle crime in downtown Montgomery.

No arrests have been reported as inquiries continue into this incident.

Mayor Steven L. Reed supported the governor's push for state help but expressed concern that relaxed state gun laws have undermined police effectiveness. In 2023, Alabama eliminated the permit requirement for carrying concealed handguns publicly, which Reed argued complicates the enforcement of safety measures.

“We welcome any assistance the state is willing to provide. But real safety requires more than additional troopers or task forces; it requires the courage to confront the culture of easy access to guns,” Reed stated, reflecting on the need for community responsibility in gun ownership.

Reed highlighted that there were five police officers present nearby during the shooting, including one positioned within 50 feet of the scene.
