MINNEAPOLIS (Civitas) — A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, during an encounter in Minneapolis.
Born in Colorado, Macklin Good was a proud U.S. citizen who had moved to Minnesota less than a year ago, having previously lived in Kansas City, Missouri. Few details of her past indicate any legal troubles besides minor traffic violations.
On social media, she referred to herself as a poet and writer, wife, and mom with interests in creative arts and community engagement. Her ex-husband recounted the horrific day when she had just dropped off her 6-year-old son at school, only to be confronted by ICE officers on the snowy streets.
Footage captured by bystanders portrays a chaotic scene where officers demanded her to exit the vehicle. As she tried to escape, an officer shot into the car, resulting in her death and raising numerous questions about the use of lethal force by federal agents.
After the shooting, video revealed a distraught woman, believed to be Macklin Good's partner, crying out in grief, amplifying calls for accountability and reform within immigration enforcement practices.
Reports from the Trump's administration framed Macklin Good as a threat, alleging that she attempted to harm federal agents with her vehicle. However, family members refute these claims, portraying her as a devoted individual with no prior troubles with the law.
She had a vibrant life where she participated in Christian youth activities and had a love for singing, with aspirations in creative writing that earned her accolades in 2020.
Her immediate family includes two children from her first marriage and a toddler from her second marriage, leaving behind a legacy of love and creativity.
Donna Ganger, Macklin Good's mother, expressed her sorrow and disbelief, declaring, Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, with community members demanding accountability from law enforcement and emphasizing the need for protective measures among families vulnerable to aggressive immigration tactics.
