A popular South African radio and club DJ, Warrick Stock, famously known as DJ Warras, was tragically shot dead in Johannesburg, stirring both shock and indignation in a nation already grappling with high crime rates.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon as DJ Warras was approached by three assailants near Zambesi House, where he had been supervising security installations. Police reports indicate that one suspect opened fire before fleeing the scene on foot.
Despite the attack occurring in broad daylight, the motive remains unclear and no suspects have been arrested. Witnesses reported that footage captured a man with dreadlocks dressed in a security-like uniform during the shooting.
Time and again, South Africa is rocked by violence, with DJ Warras' murder further spotlighting the country's rampant crime rates, where approximately 63 people are killed each day.
The news has sparked an immense outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow artists, and government officials alike. His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed deep sorrow, reflecting on his role as a voice for many, and urged respect for the family's privacy during this painful time.
DJ Warras was not only a vibrant presence on radio and television, but he also ventured into business, offering security services and managing property. His loss is felt profoundly across the entertainment sector, as leaders like South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, lamented the impact of his outspoken bravery.
As authorities continue to investigate, the community awaits answers, while the legacy of DJ Warras as a beloved figure and advocate for social issues endures.
