The recent shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, have rocked the small community, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight individuals. Authorities reported that the shocking incidents occurred at a local school and a home, leading to an overwhelming sense of grief among residents.

On February 12, eight lives were lost, including beloved community members and young students. The shooting suspect, Jesse Van Rootselaar, reportedly took his own life following the events. The victims include two family members of the suspect—Jennifer Jacobs, 39, and her 11-year-old son, Emmett. Both were found dead at their residence, leaving a heartbreaking void in their family.

Further, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, 12-year-olds Kylie Smith and Abel Mwansa were among the young lives cut short. Kylie's family remembered her as a vibrant and talented artist who had dreams of attending art school in Toronto. Abel's father described him as ambitious and noted how cherished he was within the community.

Alongside them, 12-year-old Zoey Benoit was also killed in the school shooting. Her family expressed their devastation, recalling how she was a source of laughter and joy, who was deeply loved and would never be forgotten.

Shannda Aviugana-Durand, a 39-year-old teacher at the high school, also lost her life. The BC General Employees Union released a statement honoring her contributions and the profound loss felt by her colleagues and students alike.

The community of Tumbler Ridge, home to just 3,000 residents, has been forever altered. Those injured, including young Maya Gebala, who is fighting for her life after being hospitalized, further illustrate the incident’s far-reaching effects.
