At least six people have died during the Trump administration’s intense immigration enforcement campaign in the U.S., with the latest case involving a 37-year-old man who was shot by a Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis.
Federal authorities immediately branded Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen, as an armed agitator posing a threat. However, videos reveal that Pretti was holding only a phone when a masked officer opened fire on January 24.
Governor Tim Walz condemned the remarks from federal officials as 'despicable.'
Pretti, who worked as a nurse and was legally permitted to carry a handgun in Minnesota, was shot while on the ground. His death marked the second fatality in January in Minneapolis due to immigration enforcement actions.
In a previous incident, a woman was fatally shot by an ICE officer after she attempted to flee in her vehicle.
Throughout the past months, several other tragic incidents have come to light, including the death of Silverio Villegas González during a traffic stop in suburban Chicago, and Jaime Alanis, who fell and broke his neck during an ICE raid in California.
These incidents have raised serious questions about the use of deadly force and the aggressive tactics employed by immigration officers.
Many community leaders and advocates are now demanding thorough investigations and accountability for these fatalities, while also calling for an immediate end to aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.
