Donald Trump has said he would like China's help to deal with Russia as he seeks to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

I'd like China to help us out with Russia, the US president said on board Air Force One, as he flew to Asia for a whirlwind tour where he will meet China's Xi Jinping in South Korea.

However, this hope may be overly optimistic; China is Russia's biggest ally, providing vital support to Moscow amid Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine.

Trump's remarks follow a challenging week for Ukraine, marked by the US denying requests for advanced weaponry and EU leaders withholding financial assistance. The situation remains dire with continued Russian attacks in urban areas.

Negotiating a ceasefire has become central to Trump's agenda, but previous talks, including a summit with Putin, have produced little progress. He has reiterated frustrations over unproductive discussions with the Russian leader.

In his upcoming dialogue with Xi, Trump indicated that he would address various issues, including the war in Ukraine, emphasizing his perception of having a strong relationship with the Chinese president. Trump mentioned that he believes Xi could influence Putin positively.

However, the reality is complicated; China has never condemned Russia's military actions and is alleged to support Russia's war effort through oil purchases and material supplies.

As Trump made his statements, reports indicated Russia was continuing aggressive strikes, including attacks that resulted in casualties in Kyiv, reinforcing calls for increased international support for Ukraine.
