WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Park Police officer shot during what authorities called an ambush was released from the hospital Tuesday, according to a post from the Park Police on its X account.

The officer's identity has not been disclosed, but the shooting occurred Monday evening as he was driving in an unmarked vehicle in a Washington neighborhood close to the Maryland line. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht confirmed during a press briefing that the officer was engaged in an investigation when two gunmen opened fire on him, though specific details about that investigation were not provided.

An anonymous law enforcement official revealed that the officer was shot in the shoulder but did not comment further due to the sensitivity of the investigation.

The ongoing investigation is a collaboration between the Park Police and Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department, with authorities actively searching for the two suspects involved. Jeffery Carroll, the interim police chief of Washington, noted that the officer was specifically targeted, suggesting the assailants may have been aware he was a police officer.
