NEW YORK (AP) — In a devastating accident late Sunday, an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and injuring several others. As smoke filled the cabin and debris scattered, passengers took immediate action, tearing open emergency exits and assisting each other to flee the aircraft.
Among the passengers, Clément Lelièvre expressed a sense of calm amidst the turmoil, stating, “Strangely enough, I wasn’t scared or panicked. On the contrary, I think most of us were pretty aware of what happened.” His account reflects the collective resolve of the survivors as they worked together to rescue fellow passengers, some of whom had suffered serious injuries.
The crash sent approximately 40 individuals, including passengers and fire truck personnel, to hospitals for treatment. Many have since been discharged, but the severity of the situation prompts ongoing investigations into what led to this tragic collision.
The incident occurred when the fire truck, responding to an emergency with another aircraft that had aborted its takeoff, was given clearance to cross the runway.
