In brief
In a recent statement from Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported the capture of two Chinese nationals who were fighting with Russian troops in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region. Zelensky indicated that there could be many more Chinese individuals involved on the Russian side but did not provide concrete evidence. This development coincides with increasing tensions surrounding cease-fire negotiations, particularly with the Trump administration's perceived alignment with Russia.
Zelensky underscored the situation as indicative of President Vladimir Putin's lack of genuine commitment to peace. He has directed Ukraine’s foreign minister to urgently seek clarification from Beijing regarding its stance. The foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, confirmed that he had summoned the Chinese chargé d’affaires for an explanation regarding the presence of these citizens in the conflict.
