In brief

A deadly drone attack that killed four Israeli soldiers has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Israel's air defense, specifically against drone incursions.

In the wake of Hezbollah's significant drone attack on an army base near Binyamina, Israel's air defense capabilities are under scrutiny. Although the Iron Dome system intercepts over 90% of crude rockets from Hezbollah, drones pose a more complicated challenge due to their slow speed, small radar signature, and ability to fly at low altitudes making them hard to detect and intercept. This attack, which marks the deadliest drone strike in Israel recently, underscores the system's limitations. Israeli Defense Minister Yoan Gallan emphasized ongoing efforts to find solutions to these drone threats. In addition to current defenses, Israel will soon receive the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system from the United States. Upcoming technologies, such as high-powered lasers and microwave cannons, are being developed to counter the drone threat more effectively. As drone incursions by groups supported by countries like Iran increase, Israel must adapt its defense strategies to keep its airspace secure.
