In brief
In the wake of allegations that TikTok favored presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, Romania's top court has ordered a recount of votes from the recent elections. This unprecedented move follows claims of illegal campaign financing and violations of electoral rules, leading to rising political tensions in the country.
Romania's political landscape is in turmoil following a recent court ruling that mandates a recount of votes from Sunday’s presidential election. This decision comes after allegations surfaced claiming that the social media platform TikTok provided preferential treatment to surprise frontrunner Calin Georgescu. The country's Constitutional Court has also dismissed complaints by two other candidates accusing Georgescu of receiving illegal campaign financing.Georgescu, known for his far-right pro-Russia stance and lacking affiliation to any political party, primarily utilized TikTok for his campaign, which seems to have greatly influenced his sudden rise to prominence—he secured approximately 23% of the vote against his closest rival, Elena Lasconi, who garnered 19%. As the Central Election Bureau prepares for a recount, which is a first in Romania's post-Communist electoral history, tensions mount with the next round of elections scheduled for December 8.In a statement, Lasconi called for a careful and fair recount process, underscoring that "the law must be the same for all." This sentiment was echoed by Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence, which raised concerns about TikTok's adherence to electoral regulations and its treatment of candidates during the election period. TikTok has refuted these claims, stating that all candidates were treated equally and that they acted swiftly to rectify any flagged content.Georgescu, however, maintains that his campaign was legitimate, emphasizing that it operated on a minimal budget and a small team. He expressed frustration with state institutions, accusing them of attempting to undermine the people's choice. His campaign’s grassroots appeal has attracted over 330,000 followers on social media, a significant jump in just a few weeks. As anti-Georgescu protests erupt in various cities across Romania, he urges his supporters to refrain from confrontation while expressing his views on the importance of freedom and genuine democracy. Meanwhile, Romania's telecom regulator, Ancom, has called for TikTok to be suspended pending an investigation into potential electoral manipulation, while the nation gears up for parliamentary elections that may reshape its political landscape following the recent presidential results.
