In brief

As anthropological insights blend with environmental challenges, the narrative unfolds in a striking subarctic landscape.

In mid-January, amidst howling winds and frigid temperatures, I found myself racing across an ice fjord in Greenland on a snowmobile, a whirlwind of thoughts against the backdrop of stark winter dark. The temperature hovered just around five degrees, and the sun had all but vanished. Accompanied by a Greenlandic family, this voyage to their beloved fishing territory was a part of my nearly two-week reporting expedition to this enigmatic island, which has recently garnered attention from none other than former President Trump. Trump’s interest stems from Greenland’s impressive size, strategic geography, and abundant mineral resources, amidst his controversial musings about a U.S. acquisition.During my stay, I kicked off my journey in Nuuk, the capital, delving into conversations with local political figures and everyday citizens regarding their perspectives on Trump's ambition. The feedback was unanimous: they were not fond of the idea. After days bustling with interviews, I decided to unwind with a jog through the icy streets of Nuuk, where snow softly blanketed the terrain. As I ran, a group of local runners passed by, prompting me to discreetly join them. However, I soon caught the attention of a curious Danish runner who inquired, "Who are you?" This question pulled me back to the present, revealing the deep divide between the environmental tapestry of Greenland and the weight of global political aspirations. While I meandered through idyllic winter scenes, the voices of the Greenlanders resonated clearly in the frosty air. As my adventure unfolded, the juxtaposition of their daily lives against the backdrop of political aspirations became a poignant reminder of how even the most remote places can be affected by global affairs.
