In brief

Brent crude sees a significant price drop as Israel reportedly assures the U.S. it won't target Iran's nuclear and oil sites, calming fears of Middle East supply disruptions.

Oil prices fell about 5 percent on Tuesday following reports that Israel assured the Biden administration it would not target Iran's nuclear sites or oil infrastructure. This assurance has lowered Brent crude, the international benchmark, to below $74 a barrel. Previously, tensions between Israel and Iran had led oil prices to rise to the $80 range, as markets worried about potential disruptions to oil flows from the Middle East. The international oil market has yet to experience significant price hikes despite over a year of regional conflict, mainly due to concerns about weaker global demand, particularly in China. Increased production from the United States, Brazil, and Guyana has also contributed to stabilizing prices. The International Energy Agency has suggested that oil consumption may decline continuously due to factors like electric vehicles and increased energy efficiency. Additionally, anticipation of increased production by Saudi Arabia and other members of OPEC Plus has influenced market dynamics. The U.S. oil benchmark also saw a similar drop, and gasoline prices have marginally decreased over the past year.
