In brief
Amid escalating violence and humanitarian needs in Lebanon, engineer Hania Zataari developed an aidbot to facilitate access to essential resources for displaced families.
The ongoing conflict in Lebanon has triggered a grave humanitarian crisis, displacing thousands of families in search of refuge. Hania Zataari, a mechanical engineer based in Sidon, was moved to act amidst the turmoil and created a WhatsApp-based chatbot that aids displaced individuals in accessing essential resources. With recent escalations in violence, particularly since Israel intensified its operations on 23 September against Hezbollah amidst border tensions, the situation has deteriorated. Official counts indicate that over 492 lives were lost in one day, marking a shocking spike in fatalities not seen in almost two decades due to conflict in the region. Many individuals have sought shelter in makeshift accommodations, turning schools and public buildings into temporary homes.Hania’s personal motivation stems from witnessing the devastating impact of the war on families who had to abandon their properties, savings, and livelihoods. The aidbot serves as a crucial bridge between those needing resources and the volunteers striving to provide assistance. By utilizing her programming skills, Hania designed the chatbot to streamline the process—allowing displaced individuals to communicate their needs effortlessly. The aidbot operates by collecting essential data, including the type of aid required and geographic location, which is then compiled into a user-friendly spreadsheet accessible to Hania and her team of volunteers. This system has dramatically increased the efficiency of aid distribution, allowing essential items like food, mattresses, and blankets to reach families in distress. One poignant example is Khaldoun Abbas, who fled his home due to imminent danger, only to have it destroyed shortly thereafter in an Israeli strike. Hania’s initiative became a lifeline for him and his extended family, allowing them to request and receive necessary aid, despite the ongoing turmoil and uncertainty around them. While the war rages on, and international organizations like UNICEF struggle to meet the crisis's demands, the innovation behind Hania’s aidbot shines a light on the potential for technology to address immediate humanitarian needs. Experts believe this local initiative, which intertwines digital tools with community engagement, could offer insights into scalable solutions for other humanitarian crises worldwide. In a region fraught with conflicts and suffering, Hania’s efforts epitomize resilience and could provide a model for harnessing technology in local contexts to alleviate the pressing challenges faced by communities in crisis.
