Survivors recount their terrifying experience as an American Airlines plane catches fire during an emergency landing in Denver.
"Terrifying and exhausting," said Michele Woods, describing her experience as an American Airlines flight turned into a nightmare after it was forced to make an emergency landing in Denver, Colorado. The flight, initially headed for Dallas, carried 172 passengers and six crew members, all of whom ultimately escaped without life-threatening injuries, although 12 required treatment for minor ailments.
"Everything was perfectly fine until we were in the air and suddenly we heard a loud noise coming from one of the engines," Woods explained. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later confirmed that upon detecting engine vibrations, the crew diverted the aircraft to Denver around 5:15 PM local time.
Once the plane touched down, the situation quickly deteriorated. "Smoke started filling the cabin,” recalled Woods, who sat at the front and was among the first to evacuate. However, many passengers faced a more frantic escape, depicted in widely shared images of individuals standing on the wings of the plane engulfed in smoke.
Another passenger, Ingrid Hibbit, shared her terrifying ordeal. At the time of the incident, she was separated from her husband and daughter, adding to her panic. "I could see flames out the window, and the windows were melting," Hibbit said. She noted that the challenge of disembarking was exacerbated by her choice of footwear—Birkenstock sandals—making her feel unstable as she attempted to escape.
Despite only lasting around ten minutes, the situation felt like an eternity. "I was texting my family, but we had no real way of knowing if we were all okay," she shared. Upon safely landing at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport the following morning, relief washed over the passengers and their families. “If this had happened in the air, we might not be telling this story,” Hibbit said. Her gratitude for the safety of all passengers underscored the importance of a successful emergency landing.
In the aftermath, the incident raised discussions around aviation safety protocols and emergency preparedness, as passengers counted their blessings in the face of what could have been a tragic accident.
