Tragic Train Derailment in Egypt Claims Three Lives and Injures Over 100
A train traveling from the coastal city of Marsa Matruh to Cairo derailed on Saturday, leading to a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to 103 others, according to Egypt's health ministry.
The train was en route to the capital when seven of its carriages came off the tracks, with two carriages overturning. Health Minister Dr. Khaled Abdul Ghaffar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and offered prayers for a swift recovery to those injured.
The Egyptian National Railways Authority (ENRA) is currently investigating the cause of the derailment, which remains unclear. Dr. Abdul Ghaffar visited the crash site to oversee the emergency response and later checked on the injured patients in local hospitals.
In a statement, the ENRA assured the public that anyone found responsible for the derailment would face punishment. Crews and equipment have been dispatched to clear the wreckage and restore service as soon as possible.
This incident took place between the Fouka and Jalal stations in the Marsa Matruh region. All injured individuals were transported to two nearby hospitals via ambulances, while the deceased are now in the custody of public prosecutors.
Train accidents are common in Egypt, often attributed to inadequate maintenance and insufficient investment in the railway infrastructure. One of the deadliest train disasters in recent history occurred in 2002 when more than 370 people lost their lives in a fire on a train traveling south of Cairo.
