GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Authorities reported a tragic shooting at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, where one individual lost their life and nine others sustained injuries on Sunday. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye disclosed that the shooting took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, roughly 50 miles north of Detroit. The incident was further compounded as the church was also set on fire.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that there is no ongoing threat to the community, though details regarding the conditions of the surviving victims remain undisclosed. The church is situated in a residential area, surrounded by a parking lot and a large lawn, near a Jehovah’s Witness church in the modestly sized community of about 8,000 residents, just outside of Flint.
In response to the violence, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer shared her condolences for the Grand Blanc community, stating, 'My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.'
The shooting incident occurred the morning after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at the age of 101. Dallin H. Oaks is expected to succeed him as the next president of the church.
