Interior Minister confirms Islamist motives behind the attack that claimed the life of a teenager and left others wounded.
A violent stabbing incident in Villach, Austria, has been confirmed as an Islamist attack with ties to the Islamic State organization. This revelation came from the country's Interior Minister, Gerhard Karner, following an unfortunate event that left a 14-year-old boy dead and five individuals injured. The occurrence took place on Saturday afternoon in the Austrian town, situated near the Italian and Slovenian borders.
A 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker was apprehended at the scene of the crime. According to Minister Karner, investigations suggest the suspect underwent online radicalization within a brief timeframe. Previously, it was reported that he possessed a temporary residence permit and was awaiting a resolution regarding his asylum status.
During a press briefing held on Sunday, Karner described the incident as an "Islamist attack with IS links," stressing the necessity for law enforcement and authorities to take serious action in response to such threats. The attack took place at approximately 4:00 PM local time, with two victims reported as being in critical condition later that evening.
Remarkably, a delivery worker, also a Syrian, intervened during the assault, using his vehicle to halt the attacker, preventing further injuries, as per police accounts. This stabbing incident has reignited national discussions on asylum policies, especially amid the backdrop of last year’s elections, which saw the far-right Freedom Party gain significant support.
The party's leader, Herbert Kickl, responded to the Villach attack by calling for stricter asylum regulations in Austria. With the current government facing challenges in coalition formation, President Alexander Van der Bellen is deliberating possible paths forward that might involve snap elections, minority governance, or collaborations with other political entities or expert groups to establish a stable government.
