Tragic Death of Mexican Influencer Highlights Gender-Based Violence

In a shocking incident that has drawn national attention, 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was fatally shot while livestreaming on TikTok at her beauty salon in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The incident, described by the state prosecutor's office, unfolded when an assailant entered the salon and allegedly opened fire on Marquez. The motive remains unclear, but authorities are treating the case as a femicide—a term for murders stemming from misogyny.

The United Nations reports that in Mexico, approximately ten women or girls are killed every day at the hands of intimate partners or family members, highlighting the pressing issue of gender-based violence in the country. Marquez, who boasted a following of nearly 200,000 across social media platforms TikTok and Instagram, was livestreaming just moments before her death, showing her holding a stuffed animal at a table. The tragic broadcast abruptly concluded when a person in the salon grabbed Marquez's phone to end the livestream.

Local news outlets have reported that the murderer allegedly posed as an individual delivering a gift to Marquez. First responders arrived at the location around 6:30 PM local time (12:30 GMT), confirming her death shortly thereafter, although no suspect has been identified yet by the prosecutor's office.

Marquez's fans have expressed their shock and grief over her sudden and tragic passing. Mayor of Zapopan, Juan José Frangie, noted that there were no prior indications of threats against her from the authorities. Describing femicide as "the worst thing," he emphasized the gravity of such violence against women in society. Meanwhile, forensic teams have commenced investigations into the incident, as the fight against femicide gains increasing spotlight across Mexico.
