Former NFL star Antonio Brown has been arrested on an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting incident after a celebrity boxing event in Miami, police confirmed on Thursday.
Brown, 37, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and will be extradited to Miami. At the moment, he is being held in Essex County, New Jersey. The circumstances surrounding his transfer to New Jersey remain unclear, and it's uncertain how long he has been in Dubai, but he has been active on social media from there.
According to the police report, following a boxing match on May 16, Brown allegedly retrieved a handgun from a security staff member and fired two shots at a man identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, with one bullet reportedly grazing the victim's neck.
As of now, it remains unknown if Brown has secured legal representation or when he will be returned to Miami. The attempted murder charge he faces is categorized as a second-degree felony, carrying a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a potential $10,000 fine if convicted.
Throughout his 12-year NFL career, Brown, who was an All-Pro wide receiver, garnered a record of 928 receptions, over 12,000 yards, and 83 touchdowns. However, his career has been overshadowed by various legal issues, including accusations of violent behavior and domestic incidents.
Brown's troubles escalated in 2021 when, during a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he famously stripped off his jersey and left the field in the middle of a game, which led to his release from the team.
