Nearly a dozen bystanders and first responders rushed to the scene of a private jet crash on a Texas motorway on Tuesday to help free trapped passengers.
Using what appeared to be a shovel and a sledgehammer, the passers‑by and emergency officials helped several passengers escape through an opened door, video shows.
The aircraft, a private jet flying from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, had reported major mechanical issues to Laredo airport before the crash, according to airport director Gilberto Sanchez.
One of the six people on board died in the crash; the surviving five were taken to hospital in stable condition. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.
Investigators say a vehicle was struck by the aircraft as it crashed onto the motorway; it is unclear which part of the plane impacted it. Thick smoke and flames surrounded the wreck, and five first responders suffered smoke inhalation.
The accident forced the closure of Loop 20 near Laredo, 150 m (240 km) southwest of San Antonio. Authorities expect the road to remain closed through Wednesday while the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board conduct an investigation.
Video footage of the rescue is available on social media, showing courageous civilians and emergency teams working together to save lives.
