IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Early Sunday, a shooting erupted amid a large altercation in Iowa City's nightlife area close to the University of Iowa campus, resulting in five individuals sustaining injuries, including three students, authorities reported.
The Iowa City police confirmed that several victims were swiftly transported to local hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds. At present, one victim is reported to be in critical condition while four others are stable.
As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made, prompting police to circulate images of persons of interest in connection with the incident via a campus alert. Officers were reportedly responding to multiple reports of escalating conflict when gunfire broke out.
Videos circulating on social media depicted chaotic scenes where fights emerged outside a popular bar, prompting patrons to flee in fear.
University President Barbara Wilson conveyed her concern, noting the injury of three students and emphasizing that support services are available for the university community. As we await more information, I hold these students and their loved ones in my thoughts, Wilson stated.
The University of Iowa, with an enrollment of approximately 31,000 students, issued alerts advising students to avoid the vicinity of the shooting. Officials indicated that, as the investigation progresses, there appears to be no indication that the university students were specifically targeted in this event.
In light of the violence, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds condemned the attack, stating, This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state, and pledged state support for the investigation.
