German broadcaster ZDF pulls controversial segment after Elon Musk threatens legal action
ZDF removed a two‑minute introduction to its live news programme ZDFheute Live that wrongly implied the Tesla and SpaceX founder was encouraging migrant mobs in Belfast. The clip, broadcast on Friday 12 June, suggested Musk had called for the “hunting” of migrants after a brutal knife attack drew attention to the city’s unrest.
The segment mainly relied on claims that far‑right activist Tommy Robinson had posted on X. Robinson’s post had urged British citizens to protest in a “violent” manner following the Belfast incident, but he later denied issuing any call for riots. Musk, whose X account boasts over 240 million followers, called the broadcast a “breakdown of outrageous lies” and said he would seek a cease‑and‑desist.
The Belfast violence began when a knife wielded by a Sudanese man injured a victim who lost an eye, prompting police to get the suspect in custody. The event sparked arson and heightened security concerns across the city.
In a statement to the BBC on Tuesday, ZDF admitted that its wording had been “imprecise and misleading”. The broadcaster promptly removed the disputed introduction and issued a corrective notice on Saturday. A German law firm representing Musk obtained a cease‑and‑desist declaration that ZDF has been following.
The incident feeds into broader criticisms that Musk and other social media platforms inflate anti‑migrant narratives. The UK’s Centre for Countering Digital Hate linked Musk to the spread of anti‑migrant content that fostered the violent atmosphere in Belfast. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described Musk as a “whip‑up” of division over the murder of Henry Nowak.
ZDF’s reaction underscores the ongoing tensions between media outlets, political figures and the public on how migration and violence are framed. With the episode now removed, journalists in Germany and beyond must sift through the mixed messages to seek truth in highly polarized narratives.
