Germany Discovers Weapons Cache – Possible Russian Assassination Plot
German intelligence agencies have uncovered a cache of handguns and ammunition hidden in a forested area outside Berlin, identifying it as a potential tool for foreign state‑run assassinations. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced a probe into a suspect in Romania linked to espionage and a planned violent act, with prosecutors working on the case under the banner of espionage and the preparation of a serious act of violence threatening the state.
While German authorities refuse to confirm direct Russian involvement, Dobrindt said he could not rule out the participation of foreign powers in the operation. The weapons were found at the edge of a woodland near the capital last year, two handguns and a cache of ammunition, which security agencies say were clearly intended for planned attacks.
Dobrindt highlighted that the German domestic intelligence agency first flagged the cache on the 2nd of October, prompting a partnership with the Berlin state police to locate the stash. After rendering the weapons inoperable, the site was monitored for months, with no further activity detected.
The investigation follows earlier accusations of Russian plots on German soil, such as the alleged attempt to eliminate the head of Rheinmetall, Germany’s leading arms firm, and the 2021 conviction of Russian national Vadim Krasikov for a Berlin park murder carried out under orders from Moscow. Krasikov was eventually released in a prisoner swap.
The minister added that prosecutors are looking into a suspect in Romania who remains in custody for alleged parcel bomb attacks, describing the individual as a low‑level agent. A similar operative was detained this year, including a person linked to Kazakhstan, underscoring the Poland‑resistant threat of covert foreign assassinations.
In light of these revelations, authorities have declared a high threat level, asserting that the discovery of the weapons cache underscores the ongoing risk to German state security from state‑sponsored violent operations.
