Kathryn Ruemmler, the top lawyer for Goldman Sachs, has announced her decision to step down in light of ongoing scrutiny surrounding her relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The resignation, effective June 30, follows significant pressure stemming from emails disclosed by the US Justice Department that revealed her affectionate reference to Epstein as 'Uncle Jeffrey' and her acceptance of luxury gifts from him.
In her statement, Ruemmler underscored her responsibility to prioritize Goldman Sachs' interests and noted the 'drip of revelations' regarding her involvement had become a public relations challenge for the renowned institution, where she led its reputational risk committee. Ruemmler, who had previously served as White House counsel under former President Barack Obama, received gratitude from Goldman CEO David Solomon for her contributions to the company.
Emails came to light detailing Ruemmler's communication with Epstein from 2014 to 2019, during which she allegedly provided him with advice on managing media scrutiny regarding his earlier legal troubles and accepted substantial gifts, including an Apple Watch and significant shopping vouchers. Solomon praised her work, stating she would be missed as a colleague and mentor.
Despite her exit, the firm emphasized that there is no allegation of criminal wrongdoing against Ruemmler. The scrutiny over her relationship with Epstein, alongside similar resignations among his associates, underscores the ongoing fallout from Epstein's notorious criminal history.
