In brief

Indian authorities have told actor Imran Khan to leave the country by 28 October after he joined a protest demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner. The 41‑year‑old, an American with an Overseas Citizen of India card, cannot vote or run for office but may remain in India. A lawyer is set to challenge the order in the Bombay High Court, arguing that OCI holders are not barred from protesting. The incident follows a surge of Gen‑Z‑led demonstrations calling for electoral reforms and increased scrutiny of the election system. Khan’s return to the screen with a new Netflix film is now under scrutiny.

Authorities in India have ordered actor Imran Khan, the nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, to leave the country by 28 October after he took part in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Khan, an American citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, can visit and stay in India but is not allowed to vote or contest elections.

Police said he participated in the agitation at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, and that the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office served him a notice for violating protest laws.

His lawyer has said the actor will appeal the order in the Bombay High Court, arguing that OCI holders are not prohibited from taking part in protests.

The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a Gen‑Z‑led movement calling for electoral reforms and the removal of the election official amid accusations of vote fraud.

After the demonstration, Khan was briefly detained by police and posted a photo from inside the detention van on Instagram, which received over two million likes.

Actor background: Khan first appeared as a child star in the 1988 hit Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and the 1992 film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. He rose to stardom with the 2008 romantic comedy Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and later starred in films such as I Hate Luv Storys, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Delhi Belly.

Khan is set to return to film with the Netflix original Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, his first leading role in more than a decade.
