RYE, N.Y. (AP) — Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, has filed a $250,000 negligence lawsuit against her suburban hometown of Rye, New York, and Consolidated Edison, the local power utility, following an incident in which she tripped and fell while walking.
Pirro claims that she tripped over a wooden block protruding from a steel plate in the roadway on August 28, just weeks after she was appointed as the top prosecutor for D.C. despite her prominent position. This steel plate was reportedly placed for gas-main work conducted by Consolidated Edison, as outlined in an amended complaint submitted in state court.
The lawsuit alleges that due to the negligence of the defendants, Ms. Pirro sustained serious personal injuries, including bruises and contusions on her head, eye, face, and shoulder areas. The filing states that Pirro suffered pain and discomfort and has experienced a limitation of movement.
The 74-year-old former Fox News host was reportedly confined to bed and required medical attention, with the complaint indicating that Ms. Pirro continues to suffer from pain related to the fall.
Representatives from Pirro, Consolidated Edison, and the city of Rye declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. The city of Rye's attorney has filed a motion to dismiss the claim, stating that it is unreasonable to say the city was negligent regarding pedestrian safety at a location deemed not to be a pedestrian walkway. An attorney for Consolidated Edison similarly argued that the dangers associated with the incident were open and obvious.
Pirro has had an extensive career in law and public service, having served both as a judge and as the district attorney for Westchester County.
