In brief

Jordan's air force struck a target in southern Syria’s Daraa province in a retaliatory strike following the fatal attack on a Greek Orthodox funeral in Karak. Five civilians were reportedly killed in the bombing, while Jordan officials report that several terrorists were hit. The Syrian government said it had not been notified of the raid and has closed its only border crossing with Jordan. The incident highlights escalating tensions and the blurred line between civilian and militant factions in the region.

Jordan's military has carried out an air raid against a site it says was occupied by "terrorist organisations" in Syria, following an arson of a Greek Orthodox funeral in Karak that left nine dead and 34 wounded.

The bombing took place over a village in southern Daraa province on Monday. Syrian health officials reported that five people—women, children and an elderly man—were killed. Jordanian authorities say their fighter jets hit and wounded a number of “terrorists,” but did not disclose further particulars.

Jordan denied having notified the Syrian government beforehand, while Syria responded by closing the remains of its sole passenger and commercial crossing with Jordan, citing safety concerns. Syrian state media said it had opened “direct channels of communication” with Jordanian officials to investigate the event.

The Karak attack occurred on Friday night and was followed by Jordanian security forces arresting two brothers and a relative who were identified as the gunmen. Interior Minister Mazen al‑Faraya confirmed on state‑affiliated TV that the attackers were all Jordanians and were holed up in a nearby village before the raid.

The incident underscores the volatile security dynamics in the region, where civilian and militant lines frequently blur and diplomatic channels tense. The Syrian authorities have also opened direct investigations into the targeting to clear up allegations of potential misidentification.
