In brief

After being fired for an 'inappropriate relationship' with a staff member, Sherrone Moore spent two nights in jail and is under investigation for alleged assault. The university found credible evidence against him, leading to his termination under a cause that avoids contract buyout. As Michigan prepares for the Citrus Bowl, the interim coach Biff Poggi steps in while the school looks for a new head coach amidst concerns over player retention and donor support.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been embroiled in controversy since his firing and subsequent arrest on allegations of assault. After two nights in custody, Moore awaits arraignment as investigations into the claims proceed.

The 39-year-old was dismissed on Wednesday after the university cited findings of credible evidence that suggested he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The details of this alleged relationship have not been revealed, but athletic director Warde Manuel characterized Moore’s actions as a clear violation of university policies.

Authorities confirmed that Moore was held at the Washtenaw County Jail, with police officials in Pittsfield Township stating they responded to reports of an alleged assault, although they did not disclose any names at that time.

Notably, Moore had only signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $5.5 million last year, but due to the circumstances of his termination, the university will not need to pay for the remaining years of his contract.

Originally the offensive coordinator, Moore was elevated to head coach following Michigan's successful season that culminated in a national title, succeeding Jim Harbaugh, who has since taken a position in the NFL.

As Michigan prepares for a Citrus Bowl matchup against No. 14 Texas, interim coach Biff Poggi will lead the team. However, concerns loom as the university grapples with potential player turnover in the transfer portal and the willingness of donors to continue support in light of recent events.
