Norway King Harald V’s Health Declines; Hospital Treatment Intensifies

King Harald V, who has presided over Norway since 1991, is staying at Oslo University Hospital following a severe bloodstream bacterial infection that has aggravated his health condition. The palace announced that, despite the deterioration, the king is receiving intensive treatment and remains on leave from his royal duties.

The monarch, 89 years old, began his sick leave a week ago, and Crown Prince Haakon, 53, is acting as regent while his father’s health is monitored.

Prior medical issues include haemolytic anaemia—a rare blood disorder reducing red‑cell counts and causing fatigue—and a pacemaker implanted after an illness during a holiday in Malaysia.

Adjustments to the king’s public engagements were made earlier in 2024 to accommodate his age and health, with the palace reducing his obligations permanently.
