In brief

In the early hours of October 23, a man opened fire on cars and pedestrians in Trappes, a suburb southwest of Paris, killing one person and injuring five others. The German‑sourced attack, which the suspect exited his Grey Renault Clio and fired intermittently from windows, was described by President Macron as a ‘racist terrorist attack’ and a turning point for the Republic. Police say the gunman targeted people of migrant background, and the National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office now treats the case as a murder linked to a terrorist enterprise. The suspect, identified as Kevin T, has four prior convictions and was not on France’s serious‑threat list, but his arrest and the response of local authorities highlight growing tensions over hate‑based violence.

In the early hours of October 23, a man opened fire on cars and pedestrians in the town of Trappes, located southwest of Paris. The attack, which lasted about fifteen minutes, left one individual dead and injured five others, including a 12‑year‑old girl who sustained eight gunshot wounds.

The suspected gunman, driving a grey Renault Clio, reportedly fired intermittently from the vehicle’s windows, striking people at a petrol station, a medical centre and a playground before moving on to neighbouring La Verrière. Authorities say the shots were aimed at people of migrant origin, and crimes retaliation motives were ruled out.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as a ‘racist terrorist attack’ and a turning point for the Republic, warning that ideologies “taking root” could no longer be tolerated. “People were targeted for their skin colour or religion,” he said while visiting the Trappes scene, urging citizens not to give an inch to hateful ideas.

The National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) is investigating the case as a ‘murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise’ and has flagged possession of a Category A weapon – a military‑grade firearm capable of burst fire – in the suspect’s inventory. Sources report the gun dates back to World War Two.

Kevin T, the 39‑year‑old suspect, was arrested by police and is known to authorities for four prior convictions that were automatically expunged. He was not on France’s serious‑threat list, and no intelligence services had flagged him prior to the attack. A member of his immediate family circle was also taken into custody the following day.

Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the attacker ‘fired randomly’ intending to cause maximum casualties and that “he wanted to cause carnage.” He added that the gunman’s aim was to kill people indiscriminately, which intensified the community’s shock and grief.

The mother of the injured 12‑year‑old told broadcaster RTL that her daughter, a native of Trappes who wore a headscarf, suffered eight gunshot wounds and will need surgery. She questioned whether her daughter’s appearance had triggered the attack and stressed that every child has the right to live peacefully in France.

Investigators are also probing a possible conspiracy with a terrorist group to plan crimes against persons. A police union official confirmed the suspect was detained in La Verrière on the main N10 road that runs through the town. Emergency services and numerous police units remain on the scene as investigations continue.
